Six months ago, Frankie Sandford took time out of The Saturdays for an undisclosed illness. And now the 23-year-old singer has given a revealing interview in which she opens up on her secret battle with depression. Frankie admits she has battled negative thoughts and panic attacks on and off since she was 15, but things finally came to a head last October, leading to her being hospitalised.
“I felt that I was worthless, that I was ugly, that I didn’t deserve anything,” she said. “I thought people would think, ‘What have you got to be depressed about?’”
But Frankie said that hospital staff and other patients were very supportive.
“A doctor told me it’s like having asthma: it’s something you have, it’s not going to go away. That made me feel better.
“There was no one point where I was ‘better’, but I noticed I started to be creative again, which I hadn’t been in years.”
The singer revealed that her fellow bandmates were nothing but kind when she told them what was happening.
“They were like, ‘Why didn’t you tell us?’ I’d got so good at covering it up, I didn’t confide in anyone.”
After a month, Frankie left hospital and went on tour with The Saturdays.
“I managed to do the tour, and only had one panic attack. I’m proud of that,” she said.
The star also has advice for other people who might be suffering with depression.
“It’s important that you talk to someone as soon as possible. Get help and advice from your GP, a friend or a parent.”
